Every morning I excitedly get out of bed.  Just a few minutes of goals and visions for the day swirl in my head. No lingering for me, no alarm, no wishful notes too.  Just me in my night gown with no hat.

I sit down to enter my dreams and what can notes.  In my journal entries that began long ago with a tiny book and its lock and key.  I used to dwell on all the icky things back then but now I write God with my cheers and glees instead.

I remember the days I knew not whether I was going to live or die.  I also never thought I’d see why cancer came by. I’m glad I had cancer because today I like the who I’ve become.  Which would have never occurred had it not appeared.

If I dwell, I can remember the day of an accident that left me in a wheel chair for years.  Because I know if I do, today there will be a lot of have nots and heart of tears too.

As a coach I’ve been trained to be in the present moment with me.  Thank goodness for apple trees.  For if it had not been for growing things fresh air would not have been.  And I would not be able to enjoy breathing it all in.

Next I write wisdom, only wisdom that I can share.  I know that someone will be here and be inspired because I’d cared. I travel through my day with a soul of glee.  Knowing, really knowing, this is the right place for me to be.  The excitement occurs when I pick up my pen and get the surprise of how far its all come.

I know there were days long ago when I dreaded my day.  I’m glad, I’m glad, there aren’t none of them anymore.  For when their inklings first appear, I now have the training and support to make them disappear.  Coaching made me work so that I can appear.

When I crawl under the covers at night, I smile with prayer at the difference I made in everyone’s life this day.  Just because I was there.  Before I drift off to sleep my sugar plums swirl with what next I can do with my pen.  I nod off to sleep, gracefully and slow, lingering on the stories yet to be told.

Occasionally there is a 2 am up.  Just because what was swirling before needs to be said.  So I honor the time with my pen and then its back to la-la-land I go.  I’m so glad of my passion, my life.  Its allows everything to be said. After my last eye lid shutter, my last thought is tomorrow’s putter.

Every workplace has one. The employee who keeps the operation moving, the “go to” person who can always be depended upon to know the answer to any question. The person who always has time to hear your thoughts, and everyone in the office feels comfortable talking to. In short, the exceptional coworker.

Mary Ann retired from our office last week after 40 years of faithful service. She knew every client, sales rep, contact and associate of the company and in particular, her manager. She knew her own job duties completely, and was acquainted with the responsibilities of every other employee in the office.

Mary Ann was not management material, it was said around the office. I don’t believe that statement was true. I think she could have done anything she wished, and quite successfully. But she didn’t want to lead. She seemed quite content to do her part to keep things running smoothly – behind the scenes. She was the office “mom” – the birthday celebration organizer, the office supplies coordinator, the interior decorator. Her work was always finished, flawlessly, and she made herself available to train new employees and help them fit into the office family. Mary Ann put together lunches when coworkers retired or moved on, and always did a major part of the holiday party planning.

Always even-tempered, even under stress, she consistently had a good word for everyone who stopped at her desk. She could be depended on for a dose of common sense and practical wisdom. Whenever a crisis came up, and there was mass panic or chaos in the office, Mary Ann would enter and bring calm to the situation with her mere presence. She’d assess the facts, make a few suggestions, and everyone would begin to get back to reality and set about making things right again. “The Voice of Reason” we called her, and rightly so.

She will be missed. It will be interesting to see how our office gets along without her, and if anyone will move into her position. Any volunteers?

During the Democratic convention the Reverend Al Sharpton quoted a shocking statistic: One third of the children in Harlem suffer from asthma. This shouldn’t be completely surprising since asthma cases have been consistently increasing over the years, especially in the cities, escalating recently during the rollback of some key environmental laws, but it is a trend we must turn back.

While parents have only limited control over the environment

where they raise their children, there is a personal environmental decision they can make that may dramatically reduce the symptoms their children experience. It all comes down to detergent, and not just any detergent. It is the detergent that they use to wash their children’s clothes and sheets. The biggest selling detergents in the United States contain large amounts of irritating phosphates, which are not only a major irritant to the skin and respiratory system, but a source of serious pollution, and a component in global warming.

If you are wondering if your laundry detergent contains phosphates just read the label, it is listed there. In most industrialized countries phosphate detergents are outlawed for good reason, but in the United States the chemical industry has a strong lobby and cheap phosphates help manufacturers keep their costs low, so their use continues.

The next time you walk though the laundry detergent section of your supermarket, take a deep breath and notice how much the smell irritates your nose and lungs.

What kinds of detergent contain low, or no phosphates? Baby detergent! No mother would dream of washing their newborn’s clothes and sheets in the family’s powdered detergent! That would give their baby’s delicate skin rashes, not to mention an increase in crying and crankiness. There are many readily available natural detergents that are phosphate-free and it’s worth the time to find them.

We have noticed tremendous improvements for both children and adults when their clothes and sheets are consistently washed in a phosphate-free detergent. By itself this change may not alleviate all of the symptoms of asthma and those related skin rashes, but it clearly removes an insidious irritant from

the equation.

It might be helpful to explain why this simple change is so effective. Testing in Europe shows that, while sleeping, people are between two thousand and ten thousand times more sensitive to chemical and electromagnetic pollution than while they are awake. When a child’s pajamas are washed with a chemical irritant and they sleep on bedclothes containing those same toxins, their immune system is challenged nightly, during a time when they are most vulnerable. Their body’s nutritional reserves are consumed in that battle and they are less able to defend themselves from the pollutants they encounter during their day. Asthma and allergies are not produced by a single irritant, but by an accumulation of minor irritants that eventually overwhelm the body’s ability to adapt. It is not a huge leap to imagine that removing a respiratory irritant from the sleeping environment, where a person spends one third of their time, is going to produce an improvement in a child’s ability to breathe.

To be, or Not to be (Average)?

When is hate OK? When it’s the feeling you have toward average. Let me make this point clearly and without reservation. I hate average!

What is average? My dictionary describes it as being about midway between extremes. Being not out of the ordinary. Common. You know, “Average”. To me average is having a focus that’s on just doing enough to meet the standard. Average is showing up for work, or school or that interview or meeting at precisely the time you’re scheduled to start. Average is choosing comfort and convenience over saying and doing what needs to be said or done. Average is doing “it” or believing a certain way because everyone else does.

The average persons focus is on what the world’s standard is. The above average persons focus is on his own standard.

Ever notice how average people whine about their problems. Above average people are too busy putting their thoughts and energies into solutions to whine. To the average person adversity is an enemy to be avoided at all costs, while to the above average person adversity is looked upon as opportunities and welcomed challenges (smiling as I type, knowing that this is true).

You should make it your habit, your way of life, to always put your above average foot forward. How do you do this? Simply enough, just by doing it. Say what needs to be said, in the way it needs to be said. If you don’t know how to say it the way it needs to be said— say it the way you believe it should be. “Nature” will take care of the rest. Do what needs to be done the way it needs to be done. If you don’t know what needs to be done or how to do what needs to be done, again put your above average foot forward and do what you believe needs to be done. Nature always honors honest effort. Always.

There are too many above average people accepting average as their standard. I know it’s hard to break out, but break out we must. I know the gravitational pull of average is strong, but the resolve to rise above average in the above average person is stronger.

We need to develop a real dis-taste for average. Talking about it is not doing it. I encourage you to resist the evil “average”. In all aspects of your life put your above average foot forward. Step out of the crowd. Simply don’t settle for anything less than above average. Don’t walk average. Don’t talk average. Don’t live average. Just don’t do it.

Kids figuring out this is average, above average thing is real simple. Pick a formula and apply it.

Formula 1 – Average thoughts lead to average actions. Average actions lead to average lives.

Formula 2 – Above average thoughts lead to above average actions. Above average actions lead to above average lives. It’s your choice.

A simple, straight forward question for you on the way out. In your home, community, place of employment, where ever you are, are you the standard bearer? The one pushing the standard higher. Or, are you the one holding the standard down?

To be, or not to be?

4 Computer Money-saving Tips

Tip #1 — Rebates:

A rebate is not always a bargain. Computers with rebates are often close to being discontinued. You may pick up a good deal or purchase technology that’s about to become yesterday’s news. What’s more, stores will often package computers with a bunch of free items to make it look like you’re getting more value. Chances are the extras are either poor quality or items you’re unlikely to use. Also, they’re counting on you to not redeem your rebate, a very common occurrence.

Tip #2 — Extended Service Warrantees:

Buyer Beware! They’re a gamble, but not always a bad idea. If you’re purchasing a laptop and you plan to travel a lot, an extended warranty that covers replacement of the monitor/display can be a good gamble. Replacing a display can cost $400-$600, making the warranty worthwhile. On the other hand, if you plan on buying the warranty for routine maintenance; save your money. Oftentimes it can take weeks for the store to send your PC out for service.

Also, remember the store where you purchased your computer does not always do warranty work during the first year, instead you may have to ship it directly to the manufacturer. In general, extended warranties cover electronics [things you can't see]. They don’t usually cover physical damage. Most extended warranties have large gray areas, leaving the warranty provider a lot of room to reject claims.

Tip #3 — Monitors:

Don’t throw away your monitor if it’s still working properly. Instead, keep it and save a chunk of money by just replacing your old CPU [computer tower]. Monitors last much longer than CPUs and the technology is usually compatible between your old monitor and the new CPU. However, if you’re dissatisfied, then monitors, keyboards and mouses are the three tools to spend extra money on, since you use them every day!

Tip #4 — Networking:

How are you connecting to the Internet? If you’re using a high speed Internet connection, such as cable broadband or DSL, you’ll want to make sure you have a network card built into your system. If you have a wireless network at home or at the office, save money and installation time by buying the wireless card built right into the computer.
